Swimming, Running, Cycling, Rowing, Marathon, Triathlon, Biathlon, Skiing, Skating In running, cycling and skiing, the quads and hip flexors act as lifters and stabilizers. Over the course of a long endurance event or competitive time trial, these muscles become short and tight. When this happens, the hamstrings and glutes (power muscles) are stretched beyond their optimal length and are put into a weakened position. The resulting effect is a downward tilting pelvis which causes a host of problems if not recognized and addressed. Running speed is inhibited, power output is dramatically reduced and endurance is negatively affected. In swimming, the legs provide power and stability to the stroke. The stronger the small rotators of the hip, the less need for the large muscles to stabilize, allowing them to put all their energy into producing power. At the shoulder, if the muscles which rotate the shoulder to the inside are allowed to dominate, the muscles which pull the shoulder downward and inward, as in the crawl stroke, will become short and tight, and will fatigue more quickly. This in turn makes the muscles of the upper back long and weak, which inhibits the proper shoulder lifting action during all swim strokes.
Since the body does not self rehabilitate, this will eventually lead to injury. Pain will result in altered body mechanics which leads to compensations, stiffness, and an inability to recover quickly - eventually causing injury.
Due to their repetitive nature, these sports are all known to produce a host of overuse injuries. The Rotex provides the solution to many of these problems that plague endurance athletes. View the Lower Leg Exercise , Internal Hip Rotation and Power Move by clicking on these links. The exercises done on The Rotex provide time effective and lasting training/event warm - up and recovery. The athlete gets the feeling of a complete stretch and properly engaged muscles in a few minutes - which usually takes several more minutes of stretching plus additional time warming - up to achieve the same feeling. Exercise on The Rotex brings the athlete to biomechanically efficient position pre training and returns the athlete to a neutral posture post training - thereby enhancing recovery.
